Simple Management now in collective!

abstract.simplemanagement, the project management tool for Plone, is now renamed collective.simplemanagement and is pressing forward

"Houston, we have a..." "I know"abstract.simplemanagement, the project management tool that we started to develop here at Abstract (see Mizio's blog post for info) has now been moved to the collective, where the development will happen from now on, and we're pushing it forward in all the important areas that were currently missing, such as the reporting tools: project managers' lives will be much easier once we're done (or so we hope).

The new repository is collective.simplemanagement (big thanks to Simone Orsi, simahawk, for the move) and we hope this move will make it easy for all the interested parties to contribute to this project. Please let us know of any features you'd like to have, or bugs you spotted, directly on GitHub issues, or just make a branch if you want to implement a feature that's missing.

New features

Regarding new features,we started by focusing on the "reports and control" area, especially the "who has been working on what" (which is pivotal for any project manager to grasp with one glance how well a project is churning forward) by drafting out some important views.

Since bookings are the fundamental informative unit on which we can base our calculation of "how much work has been done", we focused on making it easier for the developer to actually add them, by providing them with a control panel that's smart enough to show them what they should be working on (and in which order) and also to allow them to book time with very few clicks.

People shouldn't click around searching for information, but information should aggregate and come to them quite easily (so that a few views can cover all their daily needs).

We also focused on aggregating this information for the project manager, so that he can quickly see which developers are being overloaded and which developers are being underloaded (one will get stressed and the other will get bored, and both will be unsatisfied), and it will show also a condensed detail of what has been eating up time.

Last but not least, we plan to have all these "orthogonal" views available in multiple context, which will impact the level of detail and information richness.

What next?

We are planning to add very soon a lot of graphs to help project managers (such as burning charts, project priority switches) and high-level tools to manipulate easily project priorities and to offer an "holistic view" of what your company is working on at the moment, including tools to quickly change company-level priorities and refocus your combined development efforts.

Last but not least, we are quite eager to put this product to a real test and use it for good, so, with the help of Santa Claus, we might have very exciting news for the next year!
